to take something or someone into account, to pay attention to something or someone, to hold someone or something dear
Building blocks
hooli- care
-ma - infinitive ending
It’s derived from Proto-Finnic hooli (worry, concern). In Finnish they have a similar word huoli (worry, concern), interestingly the Estonian translation to this word has somewhat drifted, but can still be connected to the original translation. When you “care” for someone you are also “worried/concerned” for their wellbeing.
How to use it
Expressing concern for someone's well-being:
“Ma hoolin sinu tervisest väga.” (I care a lot about your health.)
Showing interest in someone's feelings or opinions:
“Sa ei hooli minu arvamusest” (You don’t care about my opinion.)
Taking care of someone or something:
“Ta hoolib oma vanematest väga.” (He cares a lot about his parents.)
Expressing general care or interest:
“Me peaksime rohkem hoolima keskkonnast.” (We should care more about the environment.)
Whom or what you care about is in the Elative case (ending -st):
“Ma hoolin sinust (Elative Sg)” (I care about you)
